December 10 Career PlansBen says:
I want to be a meteorologist so I can save the world from giant tornadoes or from giant bees that create tornadoes with all their giant wings. December 08 Sonics. 2007. Ben Serdy.
So, sadly, the other kids don't throw the ball to Ben because they don't think he can play. Which, arguably, he can't. But the coach has been just amazing. He played college ball and then later coached it. He worked hard to make sure Ben got a chance in the game to dribble down the court and throw the ball in during turn-overs. If he coaches again, we're definitely going to try to get onto his team. Anyhow. Today was the last game of the season. Each parent paid six dollars to get the kids trophies. Ben hasn't let go of his since he got it. He reads the plaque over and over again: Sonics. 2007. Ben Serdy. (By the way, the team name is "Sonics" because we had the same color jerseys as the Sonics). He held onto the trophy as we drove home. As we walked to the mailbox. As we sat on the couch and watched TV. He read the plaque. He felt the ball (curiously rough, like the real thing). He showed us how his basketball trophy guy kept shooting baskets. And tonight, before bed, Ben placed his trophy right under his night light so he could see it all night long. Maybe next time he'll be more interested in playing a team sport if we tell him he'll get a trophy at the end! December 06 Ben says...Sometimes I cough so much I almost throw up. But I don't. So it's OK.
You know, there's a lot of throw-up inside there.
I'm making throw-up all the time. 47 and 3/4We measured Ben last night. Since his birthday he has grown 3/4 of an inch. If he continues to grow linearly, he will be 9 feet tall by the time he's 18 years old. Good thing the growth curve is less steep than that. According the the growth chart I just looked at, if Ben continues along the just above 97%, he will be 6 feet 3 inches when he's 18.
Damn. December 02 Ben's Report CardYup. Ben is in kindergarten and he got his first report card. And we had our first parent-teacher conference.
Ben was only graded on "Life Skills". In the second and third trimesters, he'll apparently be graded on academic subjects. Really.
The grading scale is:
3 = At Standard
2 = Approaching Standard
1 = Not at Standard
And Ben's "grades"
3: Follows school rules and accepts responsibility for personal actions
2: Attentive and follows directions
3: Works well independently and uses time wisely
3: Demonstrates respect for personal and community property
3: Demonstrates self-confidence; asks questions and lets needs be known
3: Puts forth effort
3: Communicates in a respectful and courteous manner
3: Accepts suggestions and opportunites for improvement
2: Completes work carefully and on time
3: Cooperates while working in groups; supports others and accepts differences
3: Organizes work space and materials
And Ben's Teacher Coments
Ben displays excellent citizenship in class. He has a good attitude toward school and approaches his assignments in a confident manner. He works well, uses his time wisely and can identify all the letters and initial sounds in the alphabet. Ben tries to improve the quality of his work but is limited by his difficult with writing and drawing.
During the conference portion of the grading period, Mrs G said the only reason Ben got a 2 for "attentive and follows directions" is he gets distracted by two chatty boys when they all sit on the blue carpet for circle time. She said his writing is what holds him back from the "completes work carefully" life skill. She is so concerned about his poor writing skills she is referring Ben to the guidance team at the school to see if he needs help.
I was concerned but after talking to several people, I'm not so much anymore. See, Ben is a full year younger than several of his classmates. While he is eligible to go to school this year (his birthday being 15 days before the cut-off), most parents hold their boys back so that the enter kindergarten when they are six instead of five. We've already celebrated three six-year-old birthdays so far this year. Ben didn't get that third year of preschool or that extra year at home to further develop his fine motor skills and practice, practice, practice writing. He's actually behind because he's so "young."
So, what are you gonna do? We'll just keep practicing and hope that by third grade everything evens out.
Ever feel like Ben just has no privacy? |
